The United Nations General Assembly affirmed its confidence in the IAEA and urged global cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, following the annual address by IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei. Emerging from a meeting in Teheran on 6 April, IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei said he was "satisfied" with the results of his meetings which included agreement on a joint action plan with a timetable to deal with outstanding issues regarding the verification of Iran´s nuclear program. 6, Tuesday: IAEA Director General Visit to Iran. Iran has agreed to accelerate its cooperation with the IAEA, Director General Mohamed ElBaradei told reporters in Tehran today after a meeting with Gholamreza Aghazadeh, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran. Dr. ElBaradei said that a team of five IAEA inspectors will visit Iran on 12 April to verify that Iran has met its commitment to suspend enrichment of uranium. The Director General is to meet President Mohammad Khatami later today.

General Mohamed ElBaradei is visiting Iran 6 April 2004 to consult on
outstanding issues relevant to the IAEA´s verification of Iran´s safeguards

of Iran´s nuclear programme. Among other points, the resolution notes

on Iran, Libya, Other Topics.
The IAEA Board of Governors is meeting this week on nuclear safeguards, safety,
and technology issues, including the Agency´s verification of nuclear programmes
in Iran and Libya. IAEA Director General ElBaradei addressed the Board 8 March,
saying that "important lessons" have been learned over recent months for

2, Tuesday: IAEA Director General Says Iran Verification "Moving in Right Direction". Speaking to reporters in Brussels, where he attended a European Parliament energy conference, IAEA Director General ElBaradei said Iran is showing greater cooperation with the IAEA in the verification of its nuclear programme. "If you look at the big picture, we are clearly moving in the right direction. If you compare where we were a year ago and where we are today, that´s a sea change," he was quoted as saying in a Reuters report. "I hope, sometime in the future - should Iran continue to cooperate, continue to give us all the details - we should be able to see some light at the end of the tunnel."
25, Wednesday: Director General Comments on Iran Report. Director General Mohamed ElBaradei has circulated his report on the Agency´s nuclear verification in Iran to the IAEA´s Member States. Speaking to reporters this week, he said: "We have seen some good cooperation from Iran particularly with regard to access to sites. I would like to see, however, much more prompt information coming from Iran. We have made good progress so far in understanding the Iranian nuclear programme. One setback is the disclosure about the P2 centrifuge designs which Iran did not declare in their report. I hope this will be the last time any aspect of the programme has not been declared to us. 24, Tuesday: Director General Report on Iran Circulated to Member States. Director General Mohamed ElBaradei has circulated his report on the Agency´s nuclear verification in Iran to the IAEA´s Member States. The report, whose distribution is restricted, reviews progress in the IAEA´s verification activities in Iran since the IAEA Board of Governors last considered the issue in late November 2003. The IAEA is not commenting officially on the report, which will be considered at the Board's next meetings beginning 8 March in Vienna.
12, Thursday: Director General ElBaradei Urges Tougher Action Against Nuclear Proliferation & Black Market. In an essay published in the New York Times, IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei underlined the need for urgent action to toughen the world´s regime to stop the spread of nuclear weapons. His proposed measures include the need for additional authority for the IAEA, a much more stringent export control system and accelerated efforts towards nuclear disarmament. Iran´s representative to the IAEA delivered a letter to the IAEA today conveying

IAEA General Conference 15 September, Iran said it would officially respond soon
to the resolution on the verification of its nuclear programme adopted by the
IAEA Board of Governors 12 September. Mr. Reza Aghazadeh, Vice-President of Iran
and President of the Atomic Energy Organization, took issue with the Board's
action, while pledging Iran´s continuing cooperation in the framework of its
comprehensive safeguards agreement, and its consideration of an Additional

9 July, Wednesday. ElBaradei Concludes Meetings in Iran.IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaredei held meetings in Tehran with Foreign Minister Kharrazi, Vice President Agazadeh and President Khatami with a view to resolving the outstanding questions raised in Dr. ElBaradei´s report to the IAEA Board of Governors on 16 June 2003.
President Khatami and Dr. ElBaradei agreed that a team of senior IAEA experts (headed by IAEA Deputy Director for Safeguards, Pierre Goldschmidt) would remain in Iran to hold technical discussions with Iranian experts on outstanding issues.
President Khatami reiterated Iran's positive attitude with respect to the conclusion of an Additional Protocol; however he indicated that Iran is seeking clarifications on some aspects of the Protocol. To this end, it was agreed that a team of legal and technical experts from the IAEA will come to Iran in the near future to provide explanations.
1 July, Tuesday: IAEA Chief to Visit Iran. IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei will go to Tehran for talks 9 July on safeguarding Iran's nuclear programme. Dr. ElBaradei, who last visited Iran in February 2003, accepted Iran's recent invitation to hold further talks on the implementation of the IAEA safeguards agreement.
